"Shop" for space in your home or office

>> 1/30/10

"Shop" for space in your home or office by looking at drawers, bookshelves, etc. with fresh eyes. I did this the other day in my own house and laughed out loud when I realized I had 1 drawer that could be emptied in a bathroom. I was so used to it being filled with items that I never used (which meant I never opened it because it used to be filled w/ toothbrushes, combs, etc. for our 3 children.) Now that they've grown up and moved away, I can re-purpose that space into something I use daily. I turned it into a home for some of my reading materials, instead of leaving them on the top of the toilet (which I did not like).

Take 5 minutes now and 'shop' in your home or office. Open drawers, closets and containers to see if you might discover a space that can be repurposed for a current need, instead of being a burial ground for old items!

I love this idea! This is what I'm working on right now, as we are "shopping for space" for our new baby to join our home in two months.

I'll be back to visit for more of your great ideas!

Thanks so much! Glad you liked the idea.

Look at EVERY noook and cranny with 'fresh' eyes. Don't stop at drawers and shelves; also open up containers and baskets. It's amazing to see how a family's needs can change and something that used to be used alot might now possibly be discarded.

Also look 'up'. I heard one speaker say how she put hooks from the ceiling in a teensy, weensy closet. She had a large family and lived in southern California. No possibility of getting a bigger house so she had to be extra creative re: storage.

She had already used all the shelving and floorspace and was desperate to eek out a little bit more storage space...somewhere! The only other option was the ceiling, which she put to work storing some items from the hooks she installed there.

It's amazing what you can find if you look at space with a fresh mindset.

Good luck (& let us know if you discover any new storage spaces).

Linda
